Fighting Stress- One Day at a Time
Guest Post by Anna Smith
Life today comes preloaded with stress. So much so that you’d often hear a fourth grader say, “I am so stressed”. Whether they learn this from the elders around them or they actually worry more than necessary, the truth remains that even the small kids are not spared of this evil. The problem with stress is, the more you worry about it, and the more it seems to escalate. Stress cannot only impair your productivity, but can also become the root of a number of health problems. Hypertension, diabetes, migraine, heart trouble, etc. are all related to stress and tension.
Make a stress diary- note down everything that gives you stress, that worries you. Read your entries after week and analyze that how many things, which you are stressing over, actually matter. In addition, maintain a calendar, where for each day you demarcate a stress-relieving tip you’d be following for the day.
Here are a few simple ways to ward off stress and make your days a bit brighter-
Get a pet
This highly underestimated tip can work wonders. Non-human company can do wonders to your mental health. The warmth and the unconditional warmth of a pet will melt away the worries and you’ll be rejuvenated before you know.
Dance is probably the only physical activity that has a direct effect on the physiological health. For one, it makes you smarter and it is an excellent stress buster. You don’t have to be a pro at it. You can simply lock yourself up in your room, jazz up the volume and groove to the beats. You’ll feel lighter immediately.
Peel an orange
This might seem strange but it works as magic. Take out five minutes and peel an orange. Take time to appreciate the peeling of the skin, let the juices smear your hands, and let the spray from the peel freshen you up. Relish each slice with the freshness it brings and while enjoying think about this funny little fact that oranges come pre-sliced by nature.
Take unnecessary breaks
Sitting at your cubicle, are you constantly fretting about the next impossible assignment given to you by your moronic boss? No use sitting there and cribbing. Get up and go to the loo even if you don’t need to go right now. Talk to people on the way and take the time in the loo to stretch around. You’ll get back with a freshened mind.
Massage your hands
Always keep a nice hand cream handy. Whenever you feel the stress particularly overwhelming, take out five minutes and give your hands a light massage with the hand cream. The fragrance will make you happy and the instantly soft hands will make you feel good about yourself.
Go to the Greens
Take time to get a little closer to nature. Keep a plant at your office desk and fill your home with some easy-to-maintain indoor plants. It may sound silly, but name the plants, talk to them and share their stress and share your stress with them. It’ll keep you happy.
