It’s that time of year to remove all the remaining “goodies” in the house. I know, a bunch of nice relatives and thoughtful friends gave you wonderful cookies, fudge, pies, bread, etc. I’m sure they don’t even consider it junk food. You’ve been snacking during the holidays and enjoying the treats. No guilt trip here . . . I have done the same. Christmas just isn’t Christmas, for me, without a few cookie press cookies.
But, the time has come. If you haven’t done it all ready, it’s time to open up the garbage can and toss in the junk food. A bit of splurging during the holidays is fine – life isn’t really worth living if we can’t enjoy some treats. But, enough is enough. It’s no longer tasty treats from Aunt Emma – now, it’s officially junk food. Throw it out!
Junk Food – It’s Okay to Get Rid of It
I know that it goes against our nature to waste food. My mother always added “there are starving kids in (fill in the current poverty striken country)”. But, treats are just that – treats! They shouldn’t be a staple of our diets and we don’t need them after every meal. Okay, this paragraph comes from a place of prosperity and privilege but unless you are starving, it’s time to toss the junk food in the garbage can.
Don’t feel bad about it either.
Junk Food – Not Health Food
Even if you aren’t making New Year’s resolutions about getting healthier, more fit, etc. – junk food isn’t healthy. And health should always be your top priority. Open up the garbage can lid and toss all the remaining junk food in. Say a word of thanks to each person who was kind enough to make or bring something special to you, but it’s time to get rid of the junk food. You never have to tell anyone the last pieces weren’t actually eaten.
If you really can’t bring yourself to toss the junk food, at least portion it out and freeze it so the junk food isn’t tempting you every moment of the day. Bring out some pie at your next celebration. Although every day is a celebration, you don’t have to celebrate with junk food.
Start your new year out on the right foot, with the right food.
