Speaking from personal experience as a medical practitioner, I am dreadfully concerned about a ‘new’ diagnosis that is showing up in infants, children, and adults. It presents either as a case of horrible heartburn, can mimic chest pain, or can cause actual obstruction in the esophagus. The obstruction episodes are quite scary, occur with food that has to be dislodged with the Heimlich maneuver, followed by drooling and inability to swallow even secretions. It can spontaneously resolve or may necessitate a trip to the ER and then requires various trials of medications. There is no warning as to when, where, or even why this might happen. This set of symptoms is diagnosed as eosinophilic esophagitis, and is confirmed by an ‘upper GI’ exam known as an endoscope. Often it does not respond to traditional treatments for acid reflux such as PPI’s, antacids, or elimination diets and becomes a scary chronic diagnosis that waxes and wanes. The suspected cause is swelling of the esophagus due to reaction to what the immune system sees a foreign protein. Our natural defense mechanism and response (eosinophils are part of this) surroundi the foreign enemy (protein), causing swelling, pain, inflammation, choking, and obstruction.
What I want to emphasise here are the unknowns of this relatively ‘new’ (was not heard of 20 years ago) and increasing illnesses from ingesting proteins (food) our bodies identify as the ‘enemy’. I believe there are parallels between the experimentation that has occurred with food production over the past two decades, and this, as well as other more frequently seen GI issues, allergies, asthma, eczema, celiac disease, and other immune mediated diseases.
Food is medicine. Proteins are essential for growth and repair of our bodies and the building blocks of essential amino acids we cannot survive without. What we eat matters tremendously as 70 percent of our immune system is found in our gut and amino acids are important for gut integrity playing a therapeutic role in gut related diseases. We are being bombarded with new and unknown additives, new and altered proteins through extensive hybridization and genetically engineering of our foods. We have no way of knowing what is in our food without adequate labelling and disclosure. Research is often done by the very companies that are experiencing financial gain producing the end product so in essence, the fox is watching over our henhouse. As consumers we have not had a voice in any of this science and now are victims of many ‘new’ and increasing illnesses.
Little or no money is made in prevention. We make money trying to cure illness and the industry is driven by money.
We need to be our own advocates. We cannot trust that our government, the food industry or corporation is looking after our well being. Do your research and homework. As sad as it is, money is made fixing problems in much greater quantity than preventing them. In our own breadbaskets, do we really want to trust multinational corporations that are toying with our food, the very highest and most sacred source of our health and well-being? I was trained to do no harm, and I challenge you to be the skeptic I am and to question the safety and motivation of all the money and propaganda currently flowing into our county to oppose Measure15-119. No one can prove the safety of these newly designed GE (GMO) crops or the future of our health based on a system for profit. Our health, our seeds, our soils, and water have no right to be jeopordized without 100% proof of safety and benefit for our health, our neighbours, farms, and farmers, as well as provide a financial benefit for our community. Ask yourself why many companies in other states are funding to oppose what little nowhere Jackson County is doing? Why is Measure 15-119 making National news with articles in the Miami Herald, Huffington Post, etc.? What is the truth, the motivation? Are you willing to continue to ‘wait and see’ the outcomes of potential or real health risks for yourselves, your children, your grandchildren? Is it possible to connect the dots between ‘new’ illnesses, increases in many other diseases to the changes in our food? Why is Syngenta Corporation coming into Jackson County to experiment and plant crops, often in secret, that are not even allowed to be planted in their own country of Switzerland? Join me to say YES in May on Measure 15-119, and put the brakes on the experiments with our health and safety ocurring in our backyards. Do no ‘further’ harm. Vote YES May 20th on Measure 15-119.
