Finally! everyone’s discussing GMO (genetically modified organism). The first step to any change is getting people to discuss the situation and understand both sides. Regarding GMO foods it’s a pretty difficult task because each side is passionate about their beliefs and each side seems to provide scientific backing. So who is to be believed?
GMO Foods At What Costs
Recent research, which has made a big splash in the media, has many countries banning GMO foods (not to mention all the countries that had already previously banned GMO). Yet, here in the United States we continue to allow GMO foods and crops and don’t require these foods to be labeled. All eyes will be on California this November as a ballot measure is up for a vote to require GMO foods to be labeled. Big Agriculture has spent millions of dollars to try and defeat this grass roots initiative. These moves always make me want to follow the money trail. Is health or greed really the motive?
I think, without question, it’s greed when it comes to GMO. Let’s just take soybeans. Monsanto creates 94% of all soybean seeds and they are a GMO, genetically modified to withstand the use of the pesticide Round-up supposedly to “help” farmers with weeds. Oh, Monsanto produces Round-up too. So farmers pay more for the seeds, then purchase the pesticide from the same company. And they can’t save the seeds as Monsanto owns the rights; so they have to purchase new seeds each year. Then, these pesticide ridden soybeans are offered up in our food system as a “health food”. If Round-up kills living creatures on the farm, how can it possibly be good for the soil or my body? I don’t want to eat any Round-up residue – it says right on the container DO NOT INGEST! But, unless I avoid soybeans all together (my personal solution) I have no idea if I’m eating a GMO food or not, since no labeling is required! (If you really want this food, purchase organic or look for the certified GMO free label). The only group winning in this situation is Monsanto (and the other Big Agriculture Companies that provide similar products).
GMO & Genetic Roulette
The latest research has made people begin to question the health ramifications of GMO foods. And we should be questioning the food we put into our bodies. Because really the question becomes what are you willing to risk?
The movie Genetic Roulette explains how the US government ignored repeated warnings by its own scientists and allowed untested genetically modified (GMO) crops into our environment and food supply. This was truly a gamble using early technology that has now put the health of all living things and all future generations at risk.
The movie concisely explains how after twenty years of unknowingly eating GMO foods the same serious health problems found in lab animals, livestock, and pets that have been fed GMO foods are now on the rise in the US population. And when people and animals stop eating genetically modified organisms (GMO), their health improves.
If you’re still trying to understand why anyone cares about GMO foods this documentary provides compelling evidence to help explain the deteriorating health of Americans, especially among children, and offers a solution for protecting ourselves and our future. Best of all, it’s not complicated, because we “vote” with our dollar. If companies see that people aren’t interested in GMO foods, and profit begins to drop, they’ll make a change. Sure, it may not be because they care about the health and welfare of the American people, but they do care about making money.

Watch the movie. It’s well worth the $2.99 and 1 1/2 hours of your time. Start talking about GMO with your friends and family. The more people understand about GMO foods the easier it will be to move toward a healthier food system. Your life and your children’s lives really do depend on who wins the GMO battle.
And, of course, if you live in California – get out and vote! The rest of us are depending on you setting a precedent we can all follow.
