Most Creative Healthy Dinner Recipes Ever & Saving $29 per person!
Let me introduce you to Ray Barnes of Metal Works out of Mobile, Alabama. I met Ray in the parking lot of my hotel in Tampa, Florida. Ray and his crew were hired to update the metal work on a fast food restaurant (I won’t name names here).
As you see, he’s working his bar-b-que in right there in the middle of the parking lot. He’s got quite an array of healthy dinner recipes that he makes on the back of his truck’s tailgate! He explained that eating out was just too expensive since all the crew were trying to save money. He was grilling up a slab of ribs and steaks for the guys!
Healthy Recipes On The Go
As I talked with Ray he showed me how they use part of the truck as a “ice box” for their basic foods to make healthy recipes. The contents were staples – mustard, vegetables, mayonnaise, bar-b-que sauce, etc. Basically it was a giant ice chest full of food. Another part of the truck is a “pantry” with their bread, spices, etc. Basically it was a box. Then they load up the grill, mini-propane cans, and utensils. He explained that healthy dinner recipes were snap this way. He also makes food from cans, like vegetables and beans when fresh foods aren’t available.
Savings Versus Eating Out
Ray walked me through the financials of his creative cooking while traveling. He looks for the 2-for-1 deals at local markets so all the meat he was grilling with his healthy recipes this evening cost him about $12.00. He buys 4-packs of propane cans at Costco for around $8 and he gets 2-3 uses per canister; if he sees a sale he stocks up. He figures the spices cost a few cents each use. He purchases the fresh fruits and vegetables, in season, the first day when he arrives to the new location. I loved it when he said eating the local fair made easy healthy dinner recipes and was always the cheapest. He expects to spend about $5 per meal for the whole crew.
Total cost per crew member of this steak, ribs, baked beans and broccoli? $3.00! Estimated cost for the same meal if they were eating out? $32.00! That’s a $29.00 savings per crew member!
Plus, he stated that his way, all the guys get plenty to eat compared to when they were eating out sometimes there wouldn’t be enough food after a full day on the job and he’d end up spending even more money! Additionally he pointed out his are healthier recipes and he can guarantee a healthy dinner recipes. Ultimately, his crew is full, satisfied, and nourished so they can be at the top of their game the next day.
Eating Out in a New Way
Ray is one smart guy! I’ve never seen anyone tailgate in a hotel parking lot before but once I got the eating out story I realized this guy had a thing or two to teach me about healthy dinner recipes. He’s found a real solution to the problem of eating out and traveling.
I’ve grateful for the opportunity to pass along his brilliance so we can all eat healthy recipes no matter where we are “eating out”.
