Monsanto Protection Act Could Be Repealed – If You Act NOW
I took some heat when I said that Obama did the right thing by signing the Continuing Resolution that included the Monsanto Protection Act.
I noted that this was hopefully a call to action for people. And, thankfully, Senator Jeff Merkely has stepped up to the action and created an amendment to the Senate version to repeal the Monsanto Protection Act.
Monsanto Protection Act – Action to Take
Now’s the chance to possibly repeal the Monsanto Protection Act. The Senate will take up the farm bill this week. Please contact your senators TODAY. There’s no time to waste. Monsanto Protection Act – Quick Info
I’m not going go into details again since I’ve written about the background before. The short story is that the rider was slipped into the Continuing Resolution, without debate or a vote. If the Continuing Resolution wasn’t signed in March the U.S. government would shut down. The part in question has been termed the Monsanto Protection Action which ultimately gives Monsanto immunity from federal law even if genetically modified crops are ultimately deemed illegal, harm human health, or destroy the environment.
The outrage that erupted in response to its passage made the Monsanto Protection Act national news. It was lampooned by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), who sponsored the Continuing Resolution, offered a public apology. Now, there’s a campaign to force Sen. Blunt to resign and worldwide “March Against Monsanto” protests are scheduled for May 25.
The Senate is considering the amendment now, so please take action today.
Monsanto Protection Act – Our Concerns Need to be Heard
Even if nothing comes of the repeal and the Monsanto Protection Act stays in effect until the end of September 2013, this is an opportunity to allow Congress to know that we don’t appreciate these underhanded tactics. I’m still a glass-is-half-full person but we can’t stand by when our glass is being filled with junk.
Ask you’re your senators today: Please support Sen. Jeff Merkely’s (D-Ore.) amendment to the Senate version of the 2013 Farm Bill to repeal the infamous Monsanto Protection Act.
