How to Lose Weight with Whole Foods
As a whole foods diet expert, I prefer giving people options rather than restrictions. It just works better. Let’s be honest, when it comes to how to lose weight, increase your metabolism, and diet in general, you’ve probably heard it all before . . . so here’s something new – a few foods that if you add to your diet will help you speed up your metabolism, increase energy, burn more fat, and help you lose weight. Easy peasy!
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t still pay attention to the amount of sweeteners you use and refined carbohydrates. Or that you shouldn’t increase your good proteins and fat as well as vegetables and, of course water. These aren’t diet silver bullets – there’s no such thing. But these foods will rev up your metabolism so you burn more fat! We all love that kind of diet!
How to Lose Weight – Citrus
The best place to add citrus into your diet is in your water. It will flavor it and help you drink more water. The best metabolism boost comes from lemon. Lemon supports good digestion so try it in hot water or cold. It’s great for your diet plans when you add a few tablespoons of fresh lemon juice to water and drink it right before you eat. Research shows this may help lower your blood sugar response to the meal. Using lemon or lime juice in your salad dressings, marinades or on fish and seafood can also best speed up your metabolism.
Kick start your diet and metabolism with this simple addition. If you find a great buy on lemons, juice them up and freeze the juice in small containers or ice trays to make adding lemon juice into your diet super easy!
Increase Your Metabolism with Cayenne
All spicy peppers, including my favorite cayenne, have been shown to decrease appetite and increase metabolism. This is because the spice causes your body temperature to rise which then needs to be be cooled. The body burns more calories when forced to go through the cooling process. Don’t go overboard though, a little goes a long way! Add just a pinch of cayenne powder to your favorite recipes to increase your metabolism.
Add cayenne powder to meats, soups, stews, dressings, hummus and more in a small amount, one to two pinches – you won’t even notice the cayenne but it will boost your metabolism significantly.
Truthfully, I love it in my morning drink. I love it when I drink coffee, hot cocoa, coffee alternative, or even tea. Just a pinch is enough to get you going in the morning.
Turmeric – Diet Savior
Another amazing metabolism revving spice is turmeric. Research shows that turmeric increases the flow of bile in the stomach which helps to break down fat. In studies on mice, it was found that turmeric was an actual fat suppressant. Mice that were given turmeric gained less weight than mice on an equal diet.
Turmeric also helps fight insulin resistance and controls sugar levels. Plus, it’s naturally anti-inflammatory so it helps your body generally move better so you can increase your metabolism even more.
Turmeric is a regular spice in East Indian and Middle Eastern foods so there are tons of recipes to choose from on the internet. Personally, this is another spice that I add to my morning drink; again a pinch or two and you won’t even notice you added it to your diet but your metabolism will soar!
How to Lose Weight with Cinnamon
Another spice that helps balance blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. Plus it can help curb the craving for sweets! Quickly increase your metabolism by adding cinnamon to foods.
I know I sound like a repeat record, but it’s another spice I add to my morning beverage. But, you can add it to almost any food from meats, soups, salads, dressings, vegetables, and more. Don’t be afraid to through a pinch or two into whatever your making. This will kick start your diet and your metabolism!
Not all cinnamon is equal though. I talk more about bulk herbs, spices and specifically cinnamon in this video. Choose Ceylon cinnamon which has a lower level of coumarin which has been related to various liver issues. The other basic cinnamon is Cassia which is fine for occasional consumption but if you’re going to add daily cinnamon into your diet to increase your metabolism, stick with Ceylon.
Coconut Oil for Improved Metabolism
I’ve written about coconut oil. I’ve done radio shows about coconut oil. I’ve answered forum questions about coconut oil versus extra virgin olive oil. I’ve even done videos about coconut oil. I can’t say enough food things about coconut oil.
Best of all, coconut oil in your diet will help you lose fat and increase your metabolism!
Use coconut oil in place of any other oil and in the same quantity. For each tablespoon of oil your recipe calls for you can use a tablespoon of coconut oil. It is especially good for baking since it’s a high quality saturated (although healthy) fat.
